In typical Brooks Koepka fashion, the man appears poised to take over the World No. 1 ranking with very little fanfare involved. Following a third-round 67 in Jeju Island, South Korea, he leads by four over Ian Poulter and Scott Piercy at the CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges.

It wasn’t until the par-5 ninth that Koepka made his first birdie of the round, but he was able to explode soon after, making four birdies on the home nine to take control of the tournament. After making a second birdie at the 10th, he drove the green at the par-4 14th, setting up an easy, third birdie of the round.

“Yeah, that was nice. To drive it on the green there on 14 was nice,” said Koepka. “I was laughing with my caddie, I think for about five holes in a row, five or six holes in a row felt like we had 40-footers on every putt and kind of had to make some five- or six-footers.”

He did just that on 17 and 18, making birdies at the final two holes to finish off a sizzling 67. He now takes a comfortable four-shot lead into Sunday, where he can win and at worst finish solo second to take over the No. 1 world ranking.

“It was something I wanted to do, I always wanted to become World No. 1 in a week that I was playing. I thought like I could really earn it and not have a week off where it just so happens that you bump up. No, it would be very special, and to do it here would be nice and hopefully get to World No. 1 and cap it off with a win, I don’t think there would be much better.”

Ian Poulter, who shot a four-under 68, is tied with Scott Piercy at nine-under 207, four back. Rafa Cabrera Bello, Cameron Smith, Jamie Lovemark, Pat Perez, Gary Woodland and Chez Reavie are five back at eight-under 208.
